Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) earned more than NPR 5 billion from electricity exports to India during the month of August-17 september-16.
According to details released by the NEA’s System Operation Department (Load Dispatch Centre), electricity was exported to the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar, as well as to Bangladesh, through bilateral agreements and the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX).
The NEA reported that a total of 566.6 million units (kWh) of electricity were exported through various channels during the month. The exports generated revenue of NPR 5.09 billion.
Of the total exports, the largest share was supplied under bilateral power trade agreements, while the remaining electricity was sold through the power market, the authority said.
According to the NEA, electricity exports were temporarily affected after flooding in the Bhotekoshi River damaged infrastructure associated with the Chilime and Trishuli hydropower plants. As a result, power exports from some projects to India have been suspended.
The authority also stated that it has requested the Indian side to provide the necessary approvals to resume electricity exports to Bangladesh from other hydropower projects.
The NEA said it will continue working to make electricity exports more efficient, systematic, and reliable in the future.
Despite exporting electricity during the monsoon season, Nepal still faces the necessity of importing power during the winter due to lower domestic hydropower generation.
