Water week to foster hydropower sector

    waterday The government is observing National Water Week from Monday in an effort to draw attention towards policy interventions on fostering inter-linkage between water and energy to achieve broader economic and social development.

    The Nepal National Water Week 2014 is a part of the annual celebration organised to mark the World Water Day on March 22 that brings together a range of stakeholders, including development planners, environmentalists, advocacy groups and policy makers, working on water sector to raise awareness on water issues and its effective and sustainable utilisation for the benefit of humankind.

    According to the officials at the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), the lead government agency for the event, this year’s water week is being organised with the slogan “Water and Energy” to highlight the important relationship between water and energy and identify key stakeholders in the area. Various programmes like awareness rally, trainings, workshops, field visits to hydropower project sites, national-level consultation have been planned for this year. An organising committee has been formed under the chairmanship of WECS to hold the week-long event .

    On the occasion of the World Water Day, the United Nations has been organising various programmes with the member states.
