Kathmandu: The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) is preparing to remove the provision that automatically promotes the Senior Vice President to the position of President.
Although the current statute allows the Senior Vice President to automatically become President, a proposal has now been put forward to amend this provision. The executive committee has reached consensus to scrap this rule through amendments to the statute during the upcoming 24th Annual General Meeting and 8th Convention.
According to the existing arrangement, current Senior Vice President Mohan Kumar Dangi is certain to become President in the next term. The existing provision is likely to remain in effect for one additional term, after which a system of direct election for the President will be implemented.
IPPAN is also planning to allow general members to directly contest for all positions except that of President. To be eligible for the President’s position, candidates will be required to have at least one term of experience serving on the executive committee.
A meeting of the executive committee held on April 16, 2026, under the chairmanship of President Ganesh Karki, decided to hold the 24th Annual General Meeting and 8th Convention in Kathmandu on June 12, 2026.
To prepare for the convention, a three-member election committee has been formed under the coordination of General Secretary Balaram Khatiwada, with Secretary Him Pathak and member Kuber Mani Nepal.
The meeting also decided to authorize the President to appoint the Chief Election Officer, call for membership renewal by May 28, 2026, and open new memberships. Members who have not renewed for more than three years will be reviewed further, with a decision to be made in a future meeting.
Meanwhile, the proposal to transform IPPAN into a federation has been put on hold for now due to legal and procedural complexities. Incorporating recommendations from the statute amendment and redrafting committee, preparations are underway to present the amendment proposal in the upcoming meeting.
Additionally, IPPAN has approved 19 companies as new members following a call for new membership applications.
