Nepal Water and Energy Development Company (NWEDC) has been honored with the Hydro Power Project of the Year – Silver category at the prestigious Asian Power Awards 2024. This accolade recognizes the company’s exceptional achievements in sustainable energy and community engagement through its innovative EPIC process, which has set a new benchmark in Nepal’s energy development sector.
The award highlights NWEDC’s landmark initiative, the Upper Trishuli-1 (UT-1) Hydroelectric Project, a 216MW facility that is projected to supply 8% of Nepal’s power demand. With an estimated annual output of 1,456 GWh, the project is a game-changer in the country’s transition toward energy independence and economic growth.
Speaking on the achievement, Chanyeong Moon, Chief Finance Officer (CFO) of NWEDC, emphasized the project’s transformative potential:
“The Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Project showcases our commitment to not just generating energy but also creating a positive impact on local communities and ecosystems. This recognition reinforces our dedication to sustainable and inclusive development.”
The EPIC process—focusing on engagement, planning, implementation, and collaboration—has played a pivotal role in ensuring that the project aligns with both environmental and social priorities. Through innovative community programs, NWEDC has empowered local stakeholders, ensuring that the project delivers long-term benefits.
The Asian Power Awards, often dubbed the “Oscars” of the energy industry, celebrate outstanding contributions to the power sector across Asia. NWEDC’s Silver win cements its position as a leader in renewable energy innovation and community-driven development.
