KATHMANDU: Reacting to sluggish work and abysmal progress at hydropower project sites, Department of Electricity Development has sought progress report from some 200 hydropower projects with a power generation capacity ranging from 100 KW to 1000 KW.
After cancelling over two dozen survey licenses in the last three months to discourage the trend of occupying rivers, DoED has now started looking into smaller-scale hydro projects. Information Officer of DoED, Gokarna R Pantha said the project developers have been dilly-dallying the work as the rules have not clearly mentioned the study time-period of projects in that capacity as for other projects above 1 MW.
“Their licenses will be seized if there is no progress at all after they provide the information updates. Projects that are slow in progress will be warned and those who fail to report, their licenses will be cancelled,” added Pantha.
According to DoED, the term of a survey license is five years and 50 years for projects with power generation capacity of above 1 MW.
Likewise, DoED also has asked some 800 applicants to furnish details about the developer individual or organisation, including the net worth, technical capacity, recommendation of the District Water Resource Committee as per License Directives 2068.
DoED had issued survey licenses to 400 hydro projects in total capacity of 12,000 MW, and 60 projects with power generation capacity of 1,850 MW capacity were given licenses for construction. Currently, some 40 projects are generating about 700 MW power in the country.
