Works of Upper Marsyangdi Hydropower Project disrupted

    upper-marsyangdiConstruction works on the Upper Marsyangdi ´A´ Hydropower Project could not resume though the project management and the workers´ union on Sunday agreed to continue the construction from Monday.

    The construction of the project has been disrupted for the last three days following the workers´ strike. The workers have been protesting the project management´s decision to expel a driver and have disrupted the construction works.

    All Nepal Energy and Mine Workers´ Union has been leading the strike after the management expelled Avatar Singh Lama, of Dolakha, for drunk-driving and for damaging the vehicle. As many as 400 workers, including 200 Nepalis and an equal number of Chinese, are involved in the construction of the 50-megawatt hydropower project.

    The two sides, in coordination with the local administration, held talks and agreed to resume works at the project from today. They also agreed to suspend Lama for 10 days, expel him as a driver but provide a job under the project and resume works.

    It is learnt that the works had not resumed as the Union was preparing to submit a memorandum to the administration with additional demands while the project management has urged the bodies concerned to forge environment conducive to carry out works.

    The Sino Hydro Power Company and Sagarmatha Power Company are jointly constructing the project with an investment of Rs. 12 billion.
