Kathmandu — Spark Hydroelectric Company Limited has commenced tunnel excavation (tunnel blasting) works under the 128 MW Tamor–Mewa Hydroelectric Project.
According to the company, the tunnel blasting ceremony, which marks a significant milestone in the project’s construction, was held on Wednesday in Phungling, Taplejung.
With the start of tunnel blasting, underground excavation works have officially begun. The company stated that this phase is considered one of the most critical stages of the project’s construction schedule.
The company said the project has now transitioned from the planning phase to the active construction phase.
The ceremony was attended by the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, Sudip Kumar Chaudhary, along with members of the Board of Directors. The Deputy Mayor of Phungling Municipality and the chairpersons of the concerned wards attended as chief guests.
Chairman and Managing Director Chaudhary said the tunnel blasting marks not only the breaking of rock but also an important beginning toward strengthening Nepal’s energy security and building a brighter future.
He reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to completing the Tamor–Mewa Project on schedule while maintaining high quality standards, expressing confidence that the project will provide long-term benefits to the local community as well as the nation.
According to the company’s statement, Siddhartha Bank Limited is serving as the lead bank for the project’s financial management, while Machhapuchchhre Bank Limited is participating as the co-lead bank.
The company said the collaboration and loan investment from both banks have played a crucial role in securing the financial resources required for the project.
Upon completion, the 128 MW project will be connected to the national transmission system.
The project is expected to increase electricity supply, reduce energy shortages, and contribute to the country’s economic development through renewable energy.
The company stated that construction will be carried out on schedule while ensuring compliance with safety standards and giving high priority to environmental considerations.
