Kathmandu, Qatari investors are actively exploring investment opportunities in Nepal, with a particular interest in sectors such as hydropower, information technology, pharmaceuticals, and banking. This was highlighted during the inaugural meeting of the Nepal-Qatar Business Council, held in Doha on Wednesday. Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani, Chairman of the Qatar Chamber of Commerce, emphasized Qatar’s eagerness to expand its economic ties with Nepal, stating, “We will encourage more investors.”

The meeting, attended by a delegation from the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) led by President Chandra Prasad Dhakal, marked a significant step in enhancing bilateral economic relations. Discussions focused on fostering greater investment, particularly in Nepal’s growing hydropower sector, a field that has garnered significant interest from Qatari investors due to Nepal’s vast potential for clean energy generation.

President Dhakal highlighted the investment-friendly environment in Nepal, noting reforms in the legal framework and the country’s economic stability. He invited Qatari investors to explore Nepal’s hydropower projects, underscoring the abundant opportunities in the sector. “Nepal is rich in hydropower potential, and we welcome Qatari investment in this field to harness it for mutual benefit,” Dhakal stated.

The establishment of the Nepal-Qatar Business Council follows the state visit of Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Nepal in April, during which an agreement was signed to boost business cooperation. Both sides agreed to expedite the formation of the Council’s membership and to organize a Qatar-Nepal Business Summit in Nepal next year to further promote collaboration across multiple sectors, with hydropower being a focal point of discussion.

As Nepal continues to liberalize its economy and attract foreign investment, the hydropower sector, along with tourism, IT, and skill development, remains a priority for Nepalese authorities looking to strengthen ties with international investors.
