KATHMANDU, Nov 17: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is preparing to install smart meters in the Kathmandu valley as its pilot project in its bid to control the power leakage due to technical errors, and for the convenience of customers.
Presently the NEA is focused on controlling the electricity theft across the country, NEA Executive Director Kul Man Ghising said.
Electricity theft through hooking is one of the major causes of loss facing it and the installation of smart meters is one of the attempts to control technical power leakage, the NEA Executive Director said.
Of 890 megawatt of electricity available in the NEA central grid, around 100 megawatts is wasted due to theft and leakage, the NEA data shows.
With the installation of the smart meter, customers can pay the electricity bills through mobile phone. Such facility will be available for industrial corridors and corporate houses too. RSS
