Kathmandu, Nov 7 2026: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has made special preparations to ensure a reliable, regular, and quality electricity supply to consumers during the Tihar and Chhath festivals. To prevent disruptions to the power supply during Tihar, the festival of lights, the NEA has taken measures to keep the generation, transmission, and distribution systems in good condition and ensure that technical staff remain on standby 24 hours a day.
A meeting of the NEA’s senior management team, chaired by Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, was held to oversee the regular operation of the power system and manage electricity supply during the Tihar and Chhath festivals. The meeting focused on preparations to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, system operations, and the management of potential challenges during the festive period.
Furthermore, a joint virtual meeting was held with the heads of the Load Dispatch Center (LDC), the Grid Operation Department, and the provincial and divisional offices under the Distribution and Customer Service Directorate. The meeting focused on coordination regarding power supply management, system monitoring, and the deployment of necessary personnel.
Managing Director Shrestha instructed the heads of the respective offices to make all necessary preparations to prevent interruptions to the electricity supply throughout the festive period. He directed them to keep technical teams on standby to carry out immediate repairs and restore services in the event of any problems.
Additionally, instructions have been issued to complete any pending inspection and maintenance work on transmission lines and distribution systems promptly to minimize the risk of power supply disruptions. Office heads have also been directed to ensure that calls received by the ‘No Light’ service (fault reporting and customer support) are answered promptly and that consumer complaints are addressed effectively.
The peak electricity demand on the evening of Laxmi Puja during the Tihar festival is estimated to be approximately 1,700 megawatts. Managing Director Shrestha stated that domestic generation alone would be sufficient to meet this demand. Electricity production during this period is projected to reach around 2,500 megawatts. He noted that generation would exceed domestic demand, ensuring an adequate supply of electricity throughout the festive period.
Throughout the festivals, continuous coordination will be maintained among the Load Dispatch Center (LDC), the Grid Operation Department, and various distribution centers to regularly monitor electricity demand and supply. Necessary technical and managerial preparations have been made to identify potential system problems in a timely manner and address them immediately.
Meanwhile, the Authority has urged consumers to use electricity safely during the Tihar and Chhath festivals. It has advised consumers to check the condition of electrical appliances and wiring in their homes, avoid using substandard electrical materials, and refrain from attempting repairs themselves in the event of electrical leakage or wiring problems. Instead, they should seek assistance from qualified technicians.
The Authority has also requested consumers to contact their nearest distribution center or the relevant ‘No Light’ service unit if they experience any problems or have complaints regarding their electricity supply.
