NEA Appoints Dhirghayu Kumar Shrestha as Acting ManagingDirector

Kathmandu: Nepal Electricity Authority has appointed Dhirghayu Kumar Shrestha as Acting Managing Director. Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha made the decision on Tuesday at the ministerial level.

Previously, Shrestha was serving as Deputy Executive Director at the Distribution and Customer Services Directorate of the Nepal Electricity Authority. He has been given the acting leadership role following the removal of Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya under the “Ordinance on Special Provisions for Removal of Public Officials, 2026 issued by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation. Shrestha will serve in this capacity until a new permanent leadership is appointed.

With this decision, the authority’s leadership has temporarily shifted to a new management. The interim arrangement aims to ensure continuity in management, service delivery, and ongoing projects. Priority areas are expected to include improving the distribution system, expanding transmission lines, and strengthening customer service.

Stakeholders in the energy sector have expressed expectations that the new leadership will improve power supply management, expand transmission capacity, and enhance financial discipline. There is also optimism for tangible progress in load management, integration of renewable energy, and overall customer service improvements in the coming days.
