Matatirtha–Syuchatar 132 kV Line Upgrade to Disrupt Power Supply in Kathmandu Valley for Two Days

Kathmandu, October 9, 2026: Electricity supply in the Kathmandu Valley may be affected on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11, as work is underway to upgrade and strengthen the Matatirtha–Syuchatar 132 kV transmission line to make electricity supply more reliable, high-quality and sustainable. The work involves replacing the existing conductors with new, higher-capacity ones.

The 132 kV Transmission Line Upgrading Project, operating under the Project Management Directorate of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), is replacing the old conductors on the Matatirtha–Syuchatar 132 kV double-circuit transmission line with new, higher-capacity conductors. To carry out the work, the transmission line will need to be shut down from 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, October 10, and Sunday, October 11.

The NEA is replacing the existing low-capacity conductors with high-temperature low-sag (HTLS) conductors. Approximately 400 metres of conductor remain to be replaced on one circuit of the double-circuit line. Upon completion, the upgrade is expected to increase the transmission line’s power-carrying capacity, help manage growing electricity demand and improve the overall reliability of the power system.

Electricity supply may be disrupted in areas served by the Matatirtha, Syuchatar and other relevant substations while the transmission line remains shut down. The necessary technical preparations have been made to complete the work within the scheduled timeframe, although the schedule may change in the event of adverse weather conditions. The NEA has apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the technical work.
