Kathmandu, July 3, 2025 — The Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), welcomed media representatives today at a press conference to announce the upcoming Power Summit 2025, a key international event focused on Nepal’s ambitious energy goals. Scheduled for September 17–18, 2025 (Ashoj 1–2), the ninth edition of this flagship summit is organized under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, with India as the Country Partner through the Embassy of India in Nepal.
Private Sector: Driving Force Behind Nepal’s Hydropower Growth
Since the introduction of the Electricity Act in 1992 (2049 B.S.) and the establishment of multi-party democracy, Nepal’s private sector has played a transformative role in the country’s hydropower development. Currently, private independent power producers (IPPs) generate over 80 percent of Nepal’s total energy supply.
Nepal’s installed capacity has reached 3,602 MW, of which IPPs contribute 2,900 MW. This achievement, realized within just 25 years of private sector participation, has been supported by favorable government investment policies. The private sector has mobilized more than Rs. 1,300 billion in investments so far and aims to invest up to Rs. 5,000 billion going forward.
Currently, projects totaling 4,200 MW are under construction, while another 4,100 MW await financial closure after securing power purchase agreements (PPAs).
Power Summit 2025: “Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region”
The summit aligns with the government’s advanced Energy Development Roadmap-2081, which targets an additional 25,000 MW of electricity generation within the next decade, bringing Nepal’s total capacity to nearly 28,500 MW by 2035.
Highlighting this dramatic increase—from just 3,600 MW generated over 114 years since the first power plant—the summit emphasizes that achieving these ambitious targets depends heavily on the continued responsibility and active engagement of the private sector.
