
Kathmandu — Nepal Electricity Authority Reports Strong Financial Performance
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has recorded a profit of 11.36 billion rupees in the first six months of the current fiscal year. During this period (mid-July to mid-December), the authority generated 70.44 billion rupees in total revenue from electricity sales, interest, and other sources.
The NEA reported expenditures of 59.08 billion rupees, which covered electricity purchases, administrative costs, and various projects. The projected gross profit (before tax deduction) for this period stands at 11.36 billion rupees.
In the fiscal year 2016/17, the NEA faced an annual loss of 8.89 billion rupees. However, it has remained consistently profitable in subsequent years. In fiscal year 2023/24, the authority posted a profit of 14.46 billion rupees. The generated profits are being reinvested in expanding and strengthening electricity production, transmission, and distribution infrastructure, as well as electrification projects.
During the first six months of the current fiscal year, the NEA collected 53.18 billion rupees from electricity sales. In the same period, it purchased 6.31 billion units of electricity, including 1.15 billion units from its subsidiaries and affiliated companies and 5.16 billion units from private producers.
For these electricity purchases, the authority made payments totaling 34.84 billion rupees. Additionally, 242 million units of electricity were imported from India at a cost of 1.65 billion rupees. Meanwhile, from mid-July to mid-December, the NEA exported 1.77 billion units of electricity to India, generating 13.09 billion rupees in revenue.
Under the development budget received from the government and foreign aid, the authority spent 13.35 billion rupees on various infrastructure projects and electrification efforts. Of this, 10.49 billion rupees were directly allocated for foreign aid payments.
