SMEC awarded contract for 20-MW Budhi Ganga small hydropower project in Nepal

    SMEC received a contract from the government of Nepal’s Department of Electricity Development to provide detailed engineering designs and environmental and social impact assessments for the 20-MW Budhi Ganga small hydropower project.

    This run-of-river project will be located on the Budhi Ganga River in the Far-Western Development Region and is expected to generate 2,520 GWh of electricity annually.

    According to a press release from SMEC, the objectives of the small hydro project are to increase electricity generation capacity in Nepal, help meet growing load demand and reduce load shedding, and contribute to national economic and social development.

    In association with Udaya Consultancy, SMEC will provide:

    — Review of existing feasibility and environmental impact study reports;

    — Detailed design of all civil works, hydraulic steel structures, electromechanical equipment, transmission lines and substations; and

    — Preparation of tender documents.

    SMEC will also complete environmental and social impact assessments and develop and environmental and social management plan. This will include preparing terms of reference and scoping documents, updating baseline surveys and conducting detailed analysis of impacts anticipated during the construction and operation phases.
