Ram-sharan-MahatKATHMANDU, Aug 27: Finance Minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat has said that the country will remain backward if the country´s politicians continue to play an ´obstructionist´s´ role.

Speaking at the 15th annual general meeting of the Society of Economic Journalists (SEJON) on Wednesday, Mahat said the country will suffer in the long-run if we fail to develop hydropower sector.

“We have to harness the hydropower potential to bring revolution in the energy sector. Citing the example of Arun III hydropower project, finance minister urged political leaders not to repeat a similar mistake in the case of Upper Karnali for which the government is preparing to sign Project Development Agreement (PDA) with Indian company GMR.

“I am astonished by the behavior of a few political parties who are acting irresponsibly and have stood against hydropower development,” said Mahat. Mahat also stressed the need for signing power trade agreement (PTA) with India to ensure energy market for hydropower developers in Nepal.
