Preliminary survey of Lower Seti Hydropower Project begins


    TANAHU, Nov 22: Preliminary survey of 105-megawatt Lower Seti (Tanahu) Hydropower Project has begun.

    The survey began two weeks after Tanahu Hydropower Ltd received survey permission from the Ministry of Energy (MoE). A technical team of Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) has been deployed to the field for the preliminary survey of the hydropower project.

    A six-member technical team of NEWJEC – an engineering consultant firm – completed site observation and preliminary survey of the hydropower project, according to Shyamji Bhandari assistant manager of Tanahu Hydropower Limited. “The team has conducted a general study of geology and dam site as well as environmental and social impacts that the project can make,” he said.

    NEWJEC will now prepare a survey report suggesting project type, height of dam and location of powerhouse. It will also suggest whether or not the project is feasible.

    The Lower Seti Hydropower Project will utilize water released by Tanahu Hydropower Project and the Madi River.

    Bidur Adhikari, site in-charge of Tanahu Hydropower Project, said that preliminary survey has begun after Tanahu Hydropower Project received license from the MoE. “We will commission detailed survey as soon as we receive the preliminary survey report,” he added.

    The detailed survey report will calculate total investment needed and determine type of project as well as outline environmental and social impacts of the project.
    According to Tanahu Hydropower Project, detailed survey report has to be prepared within two years of the issuance of survey permission.

    The project has proposed to build dam of Lower Seti about 18 kilometers downstream from the tailrace of Tanahu Hydropower Project. Lower Seti is estimated to cost US$ 220 million and expected to generate 440 million units of energy annually.

    The dam of Lower Seti will be built at Keshartar, which is about 20 kilometers downstream of Tanahu Hydropower Project’s powerhouse and 19 kilometers upstream from the confluence of Seti and Trishuli River.
