Kathmandu, April 15
The government-owned electricity production and distribution monopoly, Nepal Electricity Authority, has joined the energy exchange market of India’s NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited.
The authority was notified on Wednesday that its request for membership has been approved by the Indian government recently, the authority informs.
This will let the authority buy energy in the Indian market independently, informs the authority’s Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya. He says it is a milestone in Nepal’s energy development.
However, the authority has been allowed to only purchase power from the market, and its request for the right to sell is still pending, Shakya clarifies.
Nonetheless, Nepal is one step ahead to trade electricity from Bangladesh also via India, he says, hoping the southern neighbour would also approve the authority’s request to sell power soon.
So far, the authority has been purchasing power from the NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, Power Trade Company and distribution companies under Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand state governments. Now, it can purchase electricity directly at a competitive price.
