KATHMANDU, Feb 4: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) for 750 megawatts of solar electricity under its plan to address seasonal energy shortages, particularly during winter months.
The NEA had floated a tender around one-and-a-half years ago to procure 960 MW of solar power, selecting 63 companies through a competitive bidding process. Of the total targeted capacity, PPAs for 750 MW have been completed so far.
According to the NEA, agreements for the remaining solar projects would be finalised soon. Among the selected bidders, energy entrepreneur Uttam Bhlon secured the largest share, with projects totalling 230 MW. PPAs have been signed for 210 MW under 15 solar projects awarded to the Bhulon Group.
The projects have been awarded to Mountain–Dordi Consortium, Gapert–Rapti Consortium, and Mount–Dordi Company, which together succeeded in securing the 230 MW capacity under the tender.
Before construction begins, developers are required to complete land acquisition, environmental impact assessments (EIA), financial closure and other preparatory works.
As per the PPA provisions, solar projects with a capacity of up to 10 MW must begin power generation within 18 months, while larger projects are required to start production within two years.
Under the Mountain–Dordi Consortium, a 25 MW solar project is being developed in Nawalparasi, while 20 MW projects are planned in Baglung and Parbat.
Similarly, the Gapert–Rapti Consortium is developing 20 MW solar plants in Tanahun, Gulmi, and Arghakhanchi, and 10 MW projects each in Kapilvastu, Dang, Banke, and Bardiya.
Mount–Dordi Company is constructing two 10 MW solar projects in Kapilvastu, along with additional 10 MW projects in Banke and Bardiya.
