KATHMANDU, October 28, 2026: The construction of the 132 kV Keraun Substation in Kanepokhari Rural Municipality-2, Morang, has been completed to meet electricity demand in Morang and surrounding areas and ensure an adequate, reliable and quality power supply. Preparations are underway to energize the substation on Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1.

On these dates, the transmission line will be looped in and looped out at the Keraun Substation along the Duhabi–Damak section of the East-West 132 kV transmission line. The substation will receive electricity from the Duhabi–Damak 132 kV transmission line.

The Duhabi–Damak transmission line will be shut down from 4 am to 12 noon on both Saturday and Sunday to carry out the loop-in and loop-out work. As a result, electricity supply will be disrupted during these hours across Jhapa, Ilam, Panchthar and Taplejung districts, as well as in urlabari, Pathari and surrounding areas of Morang.

The substation is equipped with two 132/33 kV power transformers, each with a capacity of 63 MVA, and one 33/11 kV power transformer with a capacity of 22.5 MVA. Its total capacity is 148.5 MVA.

Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha said the Keraun Substation would make electricity supply in Morang safer and more reliable while reducing technical losses.

Noting that the existing 33 kV transmission lines serving the area are long, resulting in high technical losses and frequent power tripping for consumers, Shrestha said the shorter 33 kV lines would reduce losses, improve voltage and make the electricity supply more reliable and of better quality.

Currently, the area receives electricity through the approximately 50-kilometre-long Duhabi–Rani–Rangeli 33 kV transmission line. The reduced line length is expected to improve the power supply.

Five 11 kV feeder lines have been installed at the substation to distribute electricity locally. In addition, Keraun–Rangeli and Keraun–Biratchowk 33 kV double-circuit transmission lines have been constructed. Darshan Rai Yadav, project chief of the Keraun Substation Project, said these lines would also be energized once the substation comes into operation.

The construction contract for the project was signed in June/July 2021. With an estimated cost of approximately Rs 1 billion, the project was built with investment from the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Electricity Authority, along with concessional loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
