Kathmandu: The Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027, aimed at bringing together Nepal’s energy sector development, investment, technology, and innovation under one platform, will be held in Kathmandu from January 17 to 19, 2027. The event is being jointly organized by the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) and Events Solution Pvt. Ltd. under the theme “Resilient Energy, Prosperous Nepal.” This will be the fifth edition of the expo.
IPPAN President Mohan Kumar Dangi said the expo will prioritize the expansion of power generation alongside transmission and distribution infrastructure, electricity consumption, cross-border power trade, and the development of climate-resilient energy infrastructure. Nepal’s installed electricity generation capacity has reached around 4,300 MW, while the country has set a national target of producing 30,000 MW by 2035.
According to Dangi, the expo will also focus on building an integrated green energy market encompassing hydropower, solar and wind energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, electric vehicles, smart grids, digital energy solutions, artificial intelligence, and climate technologies.
The event will bring together power producers, project developers, investors, banks and financial institutions, insurance companies, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, government agencies, research institutions, and international companies.
Programs planned for the expo include B2B business meetings, the Himalayan Green Energy Conference, international country pavilions, technology showcases, a startup hub, project site visits, an EV rally, and a gala networking dinner.
Organizers are preparing to attract companies and stakeholders from countries including India, China, Canada, Norway, South Korea, and Germany. More than 100 exhibition stalls are expected, and the three-day event is projected to draw over 30,000 visitors.
According to the organizers, registration for participation and stall bookings is now open.
Nepal’s energy sector is currently entering an important phase of transformation. The country’s installed electricity generation capacity has reached approximately 4,300 MW, and it has set a national target of producing 30,000 MW by 2035. This goal is not limited to meeting domestic electricity demand; it is also linked to industrial development, electric mobility, renewable energy expansion, and the growth of cross-border electricity trade with India and Bangladesh.
Alongside the rapid expansion of the energy sector, however, climate-related risks are also increasing. In recent years, flash floods, landslides, and debris flows have caused damage to the infrastructure of several hydropower projects. This has highlighted the need not only to increase generation capacity but also to develop secure and resilient energy infrastructure capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change.
Nepal’s energy sector is no longer confined to hydropower alone. It is increasingly moving toward an integrated clean energy system that includes solar, wind, biogas and biomass, waste-to-energy technologies, energy storage, green hydrogen, electric vehicles, digital energy solutions, artificial intelligence, and climate technologies.
Established on 17 January 2001, with the objective of institutionalizing private-sector participation in energy generation and investment, the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) has continuously worked to promote energy development, create an investment-friendly environment, advocate policy reforms, and strengthen collaboration between the government and the private sector.
With the aim of bringing together energy development, investment, technology, and innovation on a single platform, IPPAN, in collaboration with Events Solution Pvt. Ltd., will organize the Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027 in Kathmandu from January 17–19, 2027.
Held under the theme “Resilient Energy, Prosperous Nepal,” the expo will mark its fifth edition, following previous editions held in 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024. As Nepal’s energy sector enters a new phase driven by expanded generation capacity, growing electricity consumption, cross-border power trade, and advances in green technologies, the Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027 aims to build on the achievements and experiences of earlier editions and help propel Nepal’s hydropower and broader clean energy sector to the next level.
To achieve the Government of Nepal’s target of generating 30,000 MW of electricity within ten years—and to facilitate the optimal use of rapidly evolving technologies while bringing together a diverse range of energy sector stakeholders (including investors, policymakers, experts, government representatives, equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and private sector representatives) onto a single platform—an annual energy event has been established. This event is scheduled to take place every year on the 17, 18, and 19 of January 2017, coinciding with the ‘Expo IPPAN Day’ celebration.
Organized to mark IPPAN’s anniversary, the expo is designed to move beyond the traditional focus on hydropower and encompass a broader spectrum of green energy solutions, including solar power, wind energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, electric vehicles, smart grids, and digital technologies. The expo aims to serve as a common platform that connects innovation, investment, and partnerships across Nepal’s clean energy sector.
Why Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027?
Projects with a combined generation capacity of approximately 4,300 MW have already been completed and connected to Nepal’s national grid, with the private sector accounting for more than 80 percent of that capacity. In addition, projects totaling around 6,400 MW are currently under construction, while projects with a combined capacity of more than 17,000 MW have completed studies and applied for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), placing them in the pipeline for development. These figures indicate that Nepal’s energy generation capacity is poised for rapid expansion in the coming years.
The government has set a target of increasing the country’s installed electricity capacity to 30,000 MW within the next decade. Achieving this goal will require not only expanding generation capacity but also strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure, increasing domestic electricity consumption, promoting industrial electrification and electric mobility, developing energy storage systems, and expanding cross-border electricity trade with India and Bangladesh.
Against this backdrop, the expo is being positioned as a common platform to foster the investment, technology, markets, policy frameworks, and partnerships needed to translate the national target into reality. At the same time, the rapid growth of the energy sector is accompanied by increasing risks associated with climate change and climate-induced disasters.
Drawing lessons from floods and landslides in districts such as Ilam, Sankhuwasabha, and Lamjung, as well as the recent devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river basins, the expo aims to place the need for safe, sustainable, and disaster-resilient energy infrastructure at the center of discussions. It will facilitate dialogue and knowledge-sharing on climate-resilient infrastructure, risk reduction, emerging technologies, investment opportunities, and innovation.
Opportunities Created by the Expo
The Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027 will extend beyond hydropower to promote the development of an integrated clean energy market encompassing solar and wind power, biogas and biomass, waste-to-energy technologies, energy storage, green hydrogen, electric vehicles, smart grids, digital energy solutions, artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and climate technologies.
The expo will create opportunities for business networking, investment partnerships, technology transfer, and knowledge exchange among a wide range of stakeholders, including power producers, project developers, investors, banks and financial institutions, insurance companies, technology providers, equipment manufacturers, engineering and construction firms, policymakers, regulators, universities, research institutions, startups, and development partners.

This year, the organizers are promoting the concept of an “Integrated Green Energy Marketplace,” with a focus on expanding energy production while advancing resilience, investment, and innovation across the sector.
From B2B Meetings to the Green Energy Conference
The expo’s major attractions will include B2B business meetings, the Himalayan Green Energy Conference, international country pavilions, the Green Energy Knowledge Hub, project site visits, live technology demonstrations, a Startup Hub, competitions related to energy generation and services, a Hydro-Con show, an EV rally, and a gala networking dinner.
The expo will showcase products and technologies including turbines, generators, solar PV systems, inverters, batteries and energy storage systems, transformers, switchgear, transmission and distribution technologies, grid technologies, automation systems, and smart energy solutions. Competitions featuring new energy-related concepts, products, and services developed by students and innovators will also be included as one of the expo’s attractions.
Companies and stakeholders from countries including India, China, Canada, Norway, South Korea, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Brazil are expected to participate in the expo.
Government and regulatory agencies, national and international investors, banks and financial institutions, insurance companies, project developers, technology and equipment manufacturers, importers, distributors, consultants, construction companies, universities, research institutions, diplomatic missions, media organizations, and energy-sector experts will also participate.
The Himalayan Green Energy Expo 2027 is being organized as IPPAN’s largest annual private-sector-focused energy event for the development and expansion of Nepal’s energy sector. It aims to bring the entire energy value chain—from power generation, investment, finance, technology, construction, equipment, and services to research and policy discussions—onto a single platform.
Overall, the organizers believe the expo will contribute to expanding the investment, technology, and partnerships needed to achieve the national target of 30,000 MW, while helping build a safe, sustainable, and resilient energy sector capable of withstanding climate-related risks.
More than 100 exhibition stalls will be featured, with over 30,000 visitors expected during the three-day event. In addition to the exhibition, various programs will be held to connect knowledge, technology, investment, and business networking.
