GMR Group LogoAt the time when the future of GMR’s hydropower project seemed uncertain, private power producers of the Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN), have lent out their support, overlooking several setbacks. “It is disheartening that few individuals are able to put unnecessary brakes on the project’s progress thus prolonging the energy crisis,” IPPAN said.

Indian conglomerate GMR’s 900 MW Upper Karnali hydropower project in Nepal had witnessed several hurdles ranging from strikes, political protests and damage to property.

Last month, the country’s Supreme Court stayed negotiations for a power development agreement on the project, following a petition filed by locals who claimed their rights were ignored.

The project is reported to be one of the biggest in Nepal and could help ease the country’s power crisis but is being opposed by certain sections citing national security and sovereignty.
