Boosting Birgunj’s Power Supply: Three Substations Under Construction

225

Kathmandu — The construction of three high-capacity substations has reached its final stage to ensure adequate, reliable, and high-quality electricity supply to the industrial corridor and consumers in Bara and Parsa. The three 132 kV substations are being built in Amlekhganj and Prasauni of Bara, as well as in Birgunj of Parsa.

The Nepal Electricity Authority has directed project management and construction contractors to complete the construction of substations and transmission lines as quickly as possible. According to the authority, the under-construction transmission lines and substations are crucial for managing electricity demand and supply in the Birgunj area, as well as for electricity trade with India.

The Amlekhganj 132/66 kV substation has been completed to address the electricity supply issues and meet the growing demand for the Pathlaiya-Simara-Birgunj industrial corridor. Most of the main equipment for the substation has already been installed. Final-stage work is ongoing, with plans to bring the Amlekhganj substation into operation by the second week of May 2025. One of the circuits of the East-West 132 kV double-circuit transmission line has been successfully looped into and out of the Amlekhganj substation.

Both circuits of the 66 kV line supplying electricity to the Simara-Birgunj industrial corridor from Hetauda have been looped in and looped out at the substation. The 66 kV line from Hetauda was long and had low capacity, causing voltage issues in the Simara-Birgunj industrial corridor. With the length of the 66 kV line reduced and electricity now being supplied from the 132 kV transmission line, the electricity supply to the Simara-Birgunj industrial corridor will improve once the Amlekhganj substation is operational.
