West Seti Hydropower Project by 2021

    Kathmandu, 12 September: China Three Gorges Corporation (CWE Investment Company) has expressed commitment to complete the West Seti Hydropower Project by April 2021. The company has stated this in its work plan sent recently to the Investment Board. “Three Gorges has said it would complete the project within that time,” a top official of the Investment Board said.

    As per the Three Gorges’ work plan, the project will be delayed by two years. Earlier, the 27 February agreement between the company and the Ministry of Energy stated that the project would be completed by the end of 2019.

    As per the new work plan, the company will start feasibility study in March 2013 and complete it by December 2014. The company plans to sign power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nepal Electricity Authority by January 2014. Likewise, construction work will start in 2016 and complete by April 2021. However, the work plan prepared by the Investment Board states that the project would be completed by 2019. An official of the board said they were working to bring the Chinese contractor to agreement for complete the project by 2019. The board’s work plan says PPA will be signed by July 2014. “The completion time of the project will be decided after discussing the different work plans of the board and Three Gorges,” the official said.

    The board’s chief executive officer Radesh Pant said a Three Gorges technical team will soon visit Nepal for study of the project.
