The secretariat received financing from the World Bank for the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project under which the basin plans are to be developed. Earlier this year, the World Bank’s International Finance Corp. pledged to provide US$6 billion in financing for the development of hydroelectric projects in Nepal.

In the current solicitation, the government seeks consultants to prepare a basin plan for each of four river basins to utilize water resources in a sustainable manner with due consideration to environment and aquatic ecosystem. The plans are to develop an integrated water resources development planning system that will enable the assessment and analysis of water availability, use and demand across a range of uses including hydropower, irrigation, water supply, environment and flood disaster risk management.

The river basins include the Karnali, whose hydro projects include the 900-MW Upper Karnali; the Gandaki, or Kali Gandaki whose projects include 144-MW Kali Gandaki A, the Babai and the West Rapti.
