Nepal to Boost Electricity Production to 4500 MW by Next Year, Says Minister Basnet

Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Shakti Bahadur Basnet announced the government’s target to increase total electricity production to 4500 megawatts in the upcoming financial year.

Speaking at the House of Representatives on Monday, Minister Basnet emphasized that the government aims to expand the total power generation capacity to 28,500 megawatts over the next 12 years. To achieve this, the government has implemented legal provisions to involve the private sector in the electricity business, aiming to enhance private sector participation in the energy sector.

“The Energy Development Roadmap and Action Plan 2080 has been implemented with the goal of increasing the total power generation capacity to 28,500 megawatts and accordingly upgrading the transmission and distribution system,” Minister Basnet stated. “Our immediate goal is to reach 4500 megawatts.”

He also highlighted ongoing efforts in solar and wind energy, mentioning that a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 800 megawatts of solar production is in the pipeline.
