Kathmandu, October 31

The Nepal Electricity Authority has cut off the electricity supply to Central Jail in Sundhara.

On Tuesday, the authority disconnected the electricity supply due to unpaid dues.

Mitralal Luintel, the prison’s information officer, expressed concern about the sensitive nature of the prison, emphasising the potential difficulties in case of an incident during a power outage at night.

“If the inmates engage in fights, attempt to escape, or face other issues during the night, it would be challenging to maintain control of the situation,” he told Onlinekhabar.

According to sources, there were arrears of Rs15 million in the name of the Central Jail.

“We had already paid 3.7 million rupees 15 days ago, but we didn’t have the budget to pay more than that,” Luintel said. “There has been an issue because the authority has not demonstrated sensitivity.”

There are over 3,500 inmates across all the blocks of the Central Jail. Notable figures, including former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, who was implicated in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam, as well as Chudamani Upreti alias Gore.
