Myagdi: Electricity from the national grid has been extended to 700 households in Myagdi over the past year. The Myagdi Distribution Center of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) said 700 new consumers were added in various parts of the district during fiscal year 2025/26.
According to center chief Satyanarayan Gami, electricity services have been extended over the past year to Malkwang, Khoriya, Lamsung and Phaliyagaun in Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality, as well as Mahabhir in Malika Rural Municipality. He said 110 electricity meters were installed in Malkwang, 60 in Khoriya, 25 in Lamsung, 120 in Mahabhir and 150 in Phaliyagaun.
“Although the national grid has reached Lulang in Dhaulagiri and Chimkhola in Raghuganga, consumers who have been using electricity from micro-hydropower projects have not come forward to obtain meters,” he said. “Phaliyagaun had already been electrified, but after the micro-hydropower project stopped operating, consumers took electricity meters.”
Gami said preparations are underway to extend the national grid to Khibang in Dhaulagiri; Panthok, Jugja, Sisneri and Khawang in Malika; and the tourist destinations of Moharedanda, Phulbari and Dadakharka in Annapurna Rural Municipality.
Amar Chhantyal, ward chairperson of Dhaulagiri Rural Municipality-5, said locals who previously depended on solar power, kerosene lamps, traditional oil lamps and other sources for lighting are delighted after electricity reached their homes. He said the expansion of electricity has made household work easier, helped students study, and created opportunities to operate businesses and enterprises.
The number of electricity customers under the Myagdi Distribution Center has reached 24,490, including those added in the past year, according to the center’s information officer, Prakash Jha. NEA data shows that 874 households received new electricity connections in fiscal year 2024/25, 1,438 in 2023/24, 1,238 in 2022/23, and 770 in 2021/22.
Electricity is also being distributed in the Mallaj and Waribeni areas of Jaljala Rural Municipality in neighboring Parbat through the Milan Chowk Substation under the Myagdi Distribution Center. Since fiscal year 2023/24, the NEA has been implementing a Rs 220 million project to extend national grid electricity to 2,183 households in 14 locations across Myagdi.
During the last fiscal year, 18.473 million units of electricity were consumed through the Myagdi Distribution Center, generating Rs 998.57 million in revenue from electricity bills. The center said it disconnected the electricity supply of 98 customers who failed to pay their bills on time and recovered Rs 2.57 million in outstanding dues.
According to the NEA, the electricity supply of customers who fail to pay their bills for 60 days will be disconnected, while those who remain unpaid for six months will be blacklisted.
