Tanahun Hydropower Main Dam Construction Reaches 50% Completion

Damauli — Construction of the main dam of the under-construction Tanahu Hydropower Project in Rishing Rural Municipality of Tanahun district has gained momentum.

Under Package 1 of the project, work on the 140-meter-high main dam has reached 50 percent completion.

According to project chief Shyamji Bhandari, out of the total requirement of 850,000 cubic meters of concrete for the dam, 424,120 cubic meters has already been poured. The project entered the construction phase on March 20, 2025.

Once completed, the 140-meter-high main dam is expected to become a significant milestone in Nepal’s energy infrastructure development.

Construction of the dam and related structures under Package 1 is being carried out by the Song Da-Kalika JV. Overall progress under this package has reached 59 percent, according to the project. Construction of auxiliary structures, including tunnels required for the dam, has already been completed.

The diversion of the Seti River has been completed to facilitate dam construction. Temporary cofferdams built upstream and downstream of the dam site have also been completed, the project said.

As construction is progressing on schedule, the project is expected to meet its power generation targets in the coming years.
