KATHMANDU — Electricity supply will be disrupted at various locations in Kathmandu Valley to facilitate the operation of the underground electricity distribution system and manage electricity demand during the upcoming winter.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), power supply will be cut at various locations from October 1 to October 12, 2026, under the Kuleshwor, Baneshwor, Jorpati and Kirtipur Distribution Centers for underground distribution system works and winter load management.
The NEA said electricity supply will be disrupted in the affected areas from 10 am to 3 pm to bring underground lines into operation and carry out necessary technical works. The NEA said supply will be interrupted in the Satungal-Bauthali area on October 1, Machhegaun Dobhan Chowk and Khusichok areas on October 2, Mulpani area on October 3, Gurjudhara area on October 4, and Mulpani area again on October 6.
Similarly, power supply will be disrupted in the Balambu area on October 7, Koteshwor-Balkumari area on October 8, Siphal area on October 10, Satungal-Dhaulagiri Housing area on October 11, and Dhobikhola area on October 12 for underground line works, the NEA said. It added that the scheduled power cuts will not be carried out if weather conditions are unfavorable.
The NEA has been carrying out the project in phases with the objective of making Kathmandu Valley’s electricity distribution system underground, strengthened and automated. Under the first phase, work began on constructing an underground distribution system in areas served by the Ratnapark and Maharajgunj Distribution Centers in Kathmandu.
Under the second phase, work is being carried out in the remaining urban areas of Kathmandu district; the third phase covers urban areas of Lalitpur and Bhaktapur; and the fourth phase covers areas under Pokhara and Bharatpur metropolitan cities. Under the program, 33 kV, 11 kV and 400-volt electricity lines will be placed underground, along with the installation of optical fiber cables.
According to the NEA, once the underground system comes into operation, it will enhance the reliability and safety of electricity supply and help gradually automate the distribution system. The underground system will also help address the disorderly appearance caused by haphazardly installed and tangled electricity, telephone and internet cables in roads and urban areas. The NEA said the project will contribute to improving Kathmandu Valley’s urban aesthetics and developing a more organized and modern electricity distribution system.
