Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has directed the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) to move forward in a results-oriented manner and make electricity services more reliable, quality-driven and customer-focused.
Administering the oath of office and secrecy to newly appointed NEA Managing Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha on Wednesday, Minister Shrestha said state agencies are servants of the people and must work responsibly by giving the highest priority to service delivery.
Minister Shrestha directed the NEA to pay special attention to making the electricity system, which was disrupted by flooding in the Trishuli River and has since been restored, sustainable and reliable. He said the authority should regularly analyze and project electricity demand and supply to ensure that all customers, including domestic and industrial consumers, have access to quality and reliable electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week, throughout the year.
Emphasizing the transparent, economical, efficient and optimal use of available resources, equipment and human resources during difficult circumstances, Minister Shrestha instructed the NEA to make institutional governance and customer satisfaction key indicators of its performance.
He also directed the authority to give high priority to the construction of transmission lines and improvement of the distribution system, accelerate strategically important projects, and take the lead in rebuilding power projects damaged by disasters.
Minister Shrestha said effective coordination among the ministry, the NEA and other concerned agencies was necessary to further strengthen state institutions and make them more accountable and results-oriented.
Newly appointed Managing Director Shrestha, who has been working responsibly from the grassroots to the leadership level of the NEA in responding to challenges in the energy sector caused by recent disasters, expressed confidence that he would continue working with the same commitment in the days ahead.
At the program, Acting Secretary of the ministry Dr. Jagadish Karmacharya congratulated Managing Director Shrestha on his appointment and said the government had entrusted him with the responsibility based on his expertise and qualifications. Expressing confidence that the NEA would achieve greater results under his leadership, Acting Secretary Karmacharya emphasized that the new leadership must address all challenges and move the institution forward amid the loss of lives and property and the difficulties caused by recent disasters.
