Kathmandu : The Government of Japan has agreed to extend a loan assistance up to ¥15,137,000,000, (equivalent to USD157,353,000, or about NRS13,653,000,000), to the Government of Nepal for the implementation of the Tanahun hydropower project in Japan’s Fiscal Year 2012.
Issuing a press release on Wednesday, the Embassy of Japan in Nepal, further informed that the loan carries a 0.01% interest rate per annum on the loan amount withdrawn and will be re-paid in 30 years, after the grace period of 10 years.
The notes to this effect were signed and exchanged by Kunio Takahashi, Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, and Shanta Raj Subedi, Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Nepal, on behalf of their respective Governments.
In the meantime, Masataka Nakahara, Director General from JICA Headquarter, Tokyo, and Madhu Kumar Marasini, Joint Secretary of the International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division of the Ministry of Finance, also signed and exchanged a separate loan agreement for the implementation of the said project.
Under the notes, the Government of Nepal will utilise the loan assistance to purchase the products and/or services required for the construction of Tanahun Hydropower project located near Damauli, about 150km west of Kathmandu.
Tanahun Hydropower Project is a storage type hydropower project, with the total storage capacity of 295 millionM3, and an electricity generation capacity of 140mW even during dry season.
The basic objective of this project is to meet the growing energy demand in Nepal in general and to address the severe load shedding due to the production and demand gap during peak hours in particular.
On the occasion, ambassador Takahashi further said that after completion of this Tanahun Hydropower project, the total power generation capacity of storage type hydropower projects will increase to 232mW from the current level of 92mW (jointly from Kulekhani I and II Hydroelectric Project).
The Tanahun Hydropower Project is one of the most promising projects to be implemented under the loan assistance of the Japanese ODA, after 12 years of interval since the extension of the Melamchi Water Supply Project.
Japan’s Contribution to the Energy Sector in Nepal dates back to 1975.
Some of the significant Loan projects implemented in the energy sector by Japanese Aid are – Kulekhani Hydroelectric Project I, Kulekhani Hydroelectric Project II, Kulekhani Disaster Prevention Project I, Kulekhani Disaster Prevention Project II and Kaligandaki “A” Hydroelectric Project.

फागुन २७, काठमाडौं । जापान अन्तरराष्ट्रिय सहयोग नियोग (जाइका)ले माथिल्लो सेती जलविद्युत् आयोजना निर्माणका लागि सहुलियत दरमा ऋण दिने भएको छ । अर्थमन्त्रालय स्रोतका अनुसार जाइकाले करीब रू. १५ अर्ब ७४ करोड (१ सय ८३ मिलियन डलर) ऋण उपलब्ध गराउनेछ । सोका लागि जाइकाका साउथ एशिया प्रमुख मासाताका नाकाहारा र अर्थ मन्त्रालय प्रतिनिधिबीच बुधवार सम्झौता हुने मन्त्रालयसम्बद्ध स्रोतले बताएको छ । सो ऋण ४० वर्षमा चुक्ता गरिसक्नु पर्ने छ । सो जलाशययुक्त आयोजनाको क्षमता १ सय ४० मेगावाट रहेको छ । जाइकाले शून्य दशमलव शून्य १ प्रतिशत वार्षिक ब्याज दरमा सो ऋण उपलब्ध गराउन लागेको हो ।
सो आयोजनाका लागि एशियाली विकास बैङ्क (एडीबी)ले करीब रू. १३ अर्ब (१ सय ५० मिलियन डलर) र यूरोपियन इन्भेष्टमेण्ट बैङ्कले करीब रू. ६ अर्ब २ करोड (७० मिलियन डलर) सहुलियत दरमा ऋण दिने भएका छन् । यसैगरी अबुधाबी फण्डले करीब रू. २ अर्ब ५८ करोड (३० मिलियन डलर) सहुलियत ऋण उपलब्ध गराउने छ । एडीबी, यूरोपियन इन्भेष्टमेण्ट बैङ्क र अबुधाबी फण्डसँग केही दिनभित्रै ऋण सहयोगसम्बन्धी सम्झौता हुने मन्त्रालयले जानकारी दिएको छ ।
आयोजना सन् २०१४ मा शुरू भई २०२० मा सम्पन्न गर्ने योजना छ । आयोजना निर्माणका लागि तनहुँ हाइड्रोपावर कम्पनी नामक छुट्टै कम्पनी गठन भएको छ । आयोजनाको लागत करीब रू. ३९ अर्ब (४ सय ५० मिलियन डलर) लाग्ने अनुमान छ । अपुग रकम भने नेपाल सरकारले जुटाउने स्रोतको भनाइ छ ।

Govt signs Rs 14.16 b loan agreement with JICA for 140 MW Tanahun hydropower
The government Wednesday signed an agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for Rs 14.168 billion loan assistance for the construction of Tanahu Hydropower Project.
The agreement was signed and exchanged between Madhu Kumar Marasini, Joint Secretary, International Economic Cooperation Coordination Division (IECCD) of the Ministry of Finance and Masataka Nakahara, Director General, South Asia Department, JICA amid a function held at the Ministry of Finance, a press statement issued by JICA said,
The loan will be used for construction of a reservoir hydropower plant (140MW) in Tanahu district, which will boost the current power generation capacity in Nepal by 20 percent.
The project is being co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Investment Bank and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. Among them, JICA is the largest partner and the first to sign the loan agreement.
