Govt forms committee for Nalsinggadh hydro project

    Government has formed a committee to construct 400 MW Nalsinggadh hydro power project in Jajarkot district. If constructed, it will be the largest reservoir type project in the country.

    A cabinet meeting three months ago had forwarded the proposal of the Ministry of Energy to form development committee to the cabinet´s Bill Committee for final decision. The committee has decided to form a ten-member development committee that will be responsible for project development.

    “The government will nominate chairman and two experts whereas the chief executive officer will be appointed through open competition by the Public Corporation Direction Board,” mentioned the document passed by the cabinet.

    Joint secretaries from the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Forests, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Law will be the members of the committee.

    One year ago, the Nepal Electricity Authority had signed MoU with China Three Gorges Company for the construction of the project.

    NEA has been conducting the feasibility study of the project for which the government had allocated Rs 20 million last year. Nalsinggadh is one of the priority projects of the government.

    The development committee will also take the responsibility for the construction of 112 Kilometers transmission line of 400 KV up to Kohalpur to link it with the national grid which . “The modality of the project would be finalized by the committee,” said Hariram Koirala, Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.

    The government has proposed to construct the project under the Public Private Partnership model. The license of the project is with NEA. The ministry informed that the works of the project will move ahead rapidly as soon as the some members of the committee are nominated and the process to select chief executive officer will be initiated immediately.
