Kathmandu — A 270-megawatt Bheri-1 Hydropower Project is set to be constructed in Jajarkot and Rukum West districts of Karnali Province.
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report of the project, which is being developed by Gezhouba Group Power Investment Nepal Pvt. Ltd., has been approved. The report for the project to be built in Jajarkot and Rukum West was approved on January 9, 2026.
The project, to be constructed on the Bheri River, will use a semi-reservoir (peaking run-of-river) technology and will operate under a peaking operation system. This means the project will generate more electricity during periods of high daily demand.
According to the report, the estimated cost of the project is approximately NPR 71.97 billion.
The project area will cover Wards No. 10, 11, 12, and 13 of Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot district, and Wards No. 4, 5, and 6 of Aathbiskot Municipality in Rukum West district. As stated in the report, these wards will be directly affected by the project.
A dam will be constructed at an elevation of 1,393 meters above sea level, while the powerhouse foundation level will be at 1,077 meters above sea level. The project will include infrastructure such as a peaking reservoir, spillway, intake, tunnel, settling basin, surge tank, and penstocks.
The electricity generated at the powerhouse will be distributed through the national transmission system. The report states that an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) will be implemented to mitigate the impacts arising from the project.
