Kathmandu – Renew Holdings, which is actively pursuing the development of large-scale solar energy projects in the private sector, has initiated the process to build a 49 MW solar power project in Dhading. As the first step in the project’s development, the company has applied to the Department of Electricity Development (DoED) for a survey license.
According to the department, the company formally applied for the proposed project in the Salang area of Dhading on July 7th. Once the survey license is approved, detailed technical and environmental studies for the project will begin.
Renew Holdings, which has been expanding its investments in solar energy, hydropower, and green infrastructure, has adopted a strategy to develop large-scale solar projects across Nepal over the next few years. The company has announced a target of developing more than 1,000 MWp of utility-scale solar capacity by 2030.
In addition, the company plans to develop 100 MWp of rooftop solar systems and 1,000 MWp of agrivoltaic projects. To ensure reliable electricity supply during the dry season and evening peak demand hours, it also plans to develop Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a storage capacity of 1.5 to 2 GWh alongside its solar projects.
The company was established under the leadership of Bhatbhateni Supermarket Chairman Min Bahadur Gurung. Its board and leadership team includes former minister Umesh Shrestha, former Rastriya Banijya Bank CEO Kiran Kumar Shrestha, former Century Bank Chairman Rajesh Kumar Shrestha, former Nepal Infrastructure Bank (NIFRA) CEO Ram Krishna Khatiwada, and energy and infrastructure expert Bidur Raj Gautam.
Beyond utility-scale projects, Renew Holdings is also expanding solar energy deployment in the commercial and industrial sectors. The company says it has already installed 6.78 MWp of rooftop solar systems across more than 25 Bhatbhateni Supermarket outlets. In addition, solar projects of various capacities are under implementation at CMC, Kathmandu Steel, and several garment industries.
The proposed 49 MW solar project in Dhading is regarded as a key component of the company’s utility-scale solar expansion strategy.
