SYANGA:
The Kaligandaki A hydropower project, the country’s largest hydropower project located in Krishna Gandaki village development committee-9, Syangja district, is under threat.
The Kaligandaki River has been causing erosion at the dam site and adjoining areas, putting the entire structure and nearby houses at risk.
Chairman of the Kaligandaki Concern Forum, Narayan Bhatatrai, says, “Holes seen at Krishna Gandaki VDC-8 four years ago have widened. They have threatened the dam of the project and adjoining areas.”
Bhattarai warned that landslip may wash away the Mirmi bazaar, the dam site and adjoining areas if authorities do not undertake concrete protective measures.
Ram Prasad Pandey of Mirmi says the landslide has put around 300 business and residential houses at Shree Krishna Gandaki and 30 shops at Aadhimuhan at risk.
Bhattarai laments that their repeated pleas to the Kaligandaki A project authorities to control the landslide have fallen on deaf ears. Dirghayu Shrestha, chief at the Kaligandaki A Hydro Project Generation Centre, says they have submitted a report to the higher authorities asking them to rein in the impending disaster and save the project.
