Rahughat Hydropower Project Resumes 20 MW Generation After Flood Repairs

Kathmandu, October 8, 2026: Power generation has resumed at the Rahughat Hydropower Project after repair and maintenance works were completed within 11 days following damage caused by flooding in the Kali Gandaki River on September 27.

The flood inundated the powerhouse and damaged important structures and equipment. After completing the necessary repair, maintenance and technical works, one of the project’s 20 MW units was brought back into operation on Thursday.

The flood had damaged the tailrace gate, which is used to discharge water from the powerhouse into the Kali Gandaki River after power generation. As a result, water entered the powerhouse through the tailrace, causing flooding inside the facility. The incident forced the newly completed project, which had recently begun test power generation, to shut down.

Ganesh KC, managing director of Raghuganga Hydropower Limited, the project developer, said one unit was brought back into operation after removing the water from the powerhouse and repairing the flood-damaged structures and equipment.

“We resumed power generation from one unit within 11 days after repairing the structures and equipment damaged by the flood. Work is underway to bring the other unit into operation soon,” said Managing Director KC.

The Rahughat Hydropower Project has two units, each with a capacity of 20 MW. Electricity generated by the project is being evacuated to the national grid through the 220 kV Kali Gandaki Corridor transmission line.
