Belbas Residents Demand Compensation over Tanahun Hydropower Project Risk

Tanahun — Locals of Belbas, Ward No. 13 of Byas Municipality, who have been affected by the Tanahun Hydropower Project, have demanded compensation.

Claiming that Belbas in Ward No. 13 of Byas Municipality has been put at risk due to the project, they have demanded that appropriate compensation and damages be provided.

The locals of Belbas are agitated as they are set to be affected by the under-construction 140-megawatt project in Jhaputar, Ward No. 1 of Rishing Rural Municipality.

Member of the Concern Committee, Meghnath Acharya, said that Belbas will be submerged due to the Tanahun Hydropower Project and therefore appropriate compensation must be provided. The Asian Development Bank’s Detailed Study Report has pointed out the risk of Belbas being submerged once the project comes into operation.

It has been pointed out that the settlement of Belbas will be at high risk because the embankment, built for the security of the project office, has diverted the flow of the Seti River toward Belbas. He stated that, since future floods in the Seti River could wash away Belbas, the entire settlement will need to be relocated, and the residents there should be provided with appropriate compensation.

A few days ago, Yam Bahadur Ale, coordinator of the Concern Committee, drew the attention of Energy and Water Resources Minister Kulman Ghising, who had visited Tanahun, to the risk facing the Belbas settlement. Ale informed that 170 households would be affected by the project.
