Kathmandu, 10th October — The BP Highway, which connects the federal capital Kathmandu with the districts of Bagmati, Madhesh, and Koshi provinces, has come into operation from Friday afternoon.
Due to continuous rainfall accompanied by floods and landslides on November 3rd, 4th, and 5th, around 4 kilometers of the highway were damaged at 13 different locations in Kavre and Sindhuli districts. The damaged sections have been temporarily repaired, allowing one-way traffic. According to Shubharaj Nyaupane, Chief of the Federal Road Inspection and Monitoring Office, Kathmandu, the highway will be fully opened for two-way traffic starting Sunday.
To clear the blocked road, diversions have been constructed in Roshikhol, the embankment has been repaired and the ditch has been filled. Repairs to the damaged road began on Monday. The floods and landslides caused the most damage to the road in Chowkidanda in Kavre. Roads were damaged in Katunje, Charsaybensi, Chiuribas, Mangaltar (Bokxikuna), Kaldhunga, Piple (Upper), Piple (Lower), Manti (Upper) and Manti (Lower) in Kavre. Similarly, roads were damaged in Baluwa, Aapghari and Nepalthok (suspension bridge) in Sindhuli.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising had inspected the Chowkidanda area on Thursday morning and taken stock of the road repair work. He had directed to increase equipment and manpower and arrange for lighting to continue work even at night.
