The project has issued 36.06 million public shares worth Rs 3.6 billion for locals of Dolakha , employees of financing institutions and contributors to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).
The workers employed in the 456 MW hydropower project said that they had been denied benefits from the scheme and pushed aside when shares were being issued for employees of the financing institutions. They have handed over a petition containing the signatures of 352 workers to the project.
The memorandum of association of the Tamakoshi Hydropower Project contains no provision for providing shares to its workers. “People from other related sectors have been made beneficiaries but the workers have been left behind,” said the petition. “It is like denying a room in the house to those who built it.”
The memorandum submitted to the project in the name of the Nepal Electric Painter Construction Workers’ Union has demanded 500 shares per worker.
Project chief Bigyan Shrestha said that the project would pass on the workers’ demands to the board. As per the current arrangement, workers from the affected areas are eligible to get a maximum of 300 shares while locals from the district have been allotted a maximum of 70 shares.
The project is slated to issue 15 percent of the shares to the general public from all over the country.
