Kathmandu — The Department of Electricity Development under the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has revoked the survey license for the 57-megawatt Mugu Khola Hydropower Project.
The Department has cancelled the survey permit that had been granted to Westar Energy Pvt. Ltd. to study the hydropower project.
According to the Department, the survey license issued to the company for conducting the project study has been annulled. It stated that the permit, which had been granted in accordance with the provisions of the Electricity Act, 1992 and the Electricity Regulation 1993, was revoked because the required procedures were not completed within the stipulated time.
The Department further informed that the company failed to demonstrate substantial progress within the validity period of the survey license and within the five-year timeframe, and did not complete the renewal process as required by law, resulting in the automatic cancellation of the permit.
With the revocation of the survey license, the company will no longer be allowed to carry out further studies, technical tests, or other preparatory works related to the proposed project. In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the energy sector of obtaining survey licenses without advancing projects for long periods, prompting the Department to tighten its oversight.
