KATHMANDU: Flooding in the Rahuganga River following continuous rainfall has damaged various structures of the under-construction and operational Rahuganga Hydropower Project in Myagdi district. The flood has affected not only the project’s physical infrastructure but also transmission line towers, raising concerns that power generation and transmission from the project could be disrupted.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), a complete assessment of the damage has not yet been received. Technical teams have been mobilized to identify the actual extent of the damage and initiate restoration efforts. The teams are conducting on-site inspections of the project’s structures, transmission lines, and damaged towers while collecting detailed information on the losses.
The exact scale of the damage caused by the flooding will be determined only after the technical teams complete their field assessments. Necessary repair, reconstruction, and restoration work will then be carried out. Damage to transmission infrastructure could also create challenges in integrating the project’s electricity into the national power system.
Meanwhile, continuous rainfall has also affected the power transmission system in Manang district. Landslides at several locations have disrupted a 33-kV transmission line, affecting both electricity supply and communication services.
Technical teams have been deployed to repair the damaged transmission line and restore services. Although ongoing rainfall is making it difficult for crews to reach landslide-affected areas and carry out repair work, efforts are underway to resume electricity service as quickly as possible.
As persistent rainfall continues to trigger floods and landslides, impacts are increasingly being felt across hydropower generation facilities as well as transmission and distribution systems. The restoration of damaged power infrastructure has now emerged as a major challenge for the concerned authorities.
