Puwa–2 Hydropower Project Resumes Electricity Production After Flood Damage

Kathmandu: The 4.6 MW Puwa–2 hydropower project, operated by People’s Power Limited, has resumed electricity production. The project had been completely shut down Due to continuous rainfall since October 4, the project was affected, and it resumed operation from January 22.

Continuous rain and floods in the month of September/October caused damage to the project’s headworks, intake area, and access routes, which led to a complete halt in production. Since the structure was damaged due to natural disaster, the project could not be operated safely, and hence production was stopped.

According to People’s Power Limited, electricity production has resumed after repair, reconstruction, and technical testing of the damaged structures were completed. The company stated that the technical team worked continuously to bring the project back into operation and also implemented necessary safety improvements.

The Puwa–2 hydropower project is a run-of-river project based on river flow. With the project back in operation, additional electricity will be supplied to the national grid, and the expected shortage of production during the dry season may be partially fulfilled.

Earlier, continuous rainfall and flooding had affected various small and medium capacity hydropower projects. The company has stated that in the coming days, structural improvements and risk management measures will be made more effective to reduce such natural risks.
