SANKHUWASABHA: Continuous rainfall has increased the risk around the under-construction 900 MW Arun-3 Hydropower Project in Fyaksinda, Ward No. 5 of Makalu Rural Municipality, Sankhuwasabha, after water began overflowing from the project’s diversion tunnel.
The overflow water has also crossed a temporary dam and started flowing downstream, creating additional risks to structures within and around the project site. If the water discharge continues to increase, it could affect infrastructure located near the diversion tunnel and in downstream areas.
Local residents said that the increased flow could particularly threaten the concrete bridge situated below the project site. With rainfall expected to continue, water levels in rivers and streams may rise further, prompting heightened local vigilance.
In view of the possibility of heavy rainfall, the District Administration Office has urged the public not to travel on the North-South Koshi Road section until further notice. According to Ram Bahadur Gurung, Chief of the North-South (Koshi) Road Project, rainfall has increased the risk of landslides, road subsidence, and river erosion at several locations between Netabhir in Makalu Rural Municipality and Kimathanka in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality.
Gurung said travelers and vehicle operators have been advised to avoid the road section, as the risks could lead to traffic disruptions and road blockages.
He added that prolonged rainfall in the hilly terrain could trigger landslides on already weakened roads and unstable slopes, urging people to avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities warned that road closures could leave passengers and cargo vehicles stranded midway, and requested the public to refrain from using the route to minimize potential risks.
The administration has also called for heightened alertness in settlements located along riverbanks and in landslide-prone areas across Sankhuwasabha. Chief District Officer Dr. Dijan Bhattarai said special precautions are necessary as rainfall activity is expected to intensify, with forecasts predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of the district.
The administration has advised residents living near rivers and streams to move to safer locations if water levels rise, avoid crossing risky roads and waterways at night, and stay updated on changing weather conditions through regular information channels.
