Nepal’s Electricity Access Reaches 99.1%, Power Exports Drive Strong Energy Growth

Kathmandu: Nepal has achieved significant progress in the energy sector this year. Currently, 99.1% of the population has access to electricity, which the government considers a major accomplishment.

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle, while presenting the Economic Survey for Fiscal Year 2025/26, in the Federal Parliament, stated that Nepal’s electricity generation capacity has reached 4,105 megawatts. According to him, after meeting domestic demand, surplus electricity exports to India have already begun.

Official data shows that Nepal exported 2,918 gigawatt-hours of electricity to India in the current fiscal year alone, generating significant foreign income for the country.

The government has also been expanding hydropower along with solar energy and other alternative energy sources in rural areas. This has helped extend electricity access even in remote and rural settlements.

With rising energy consumption, the government has set a goal to reduce the use of petroleum products and strengthen environmental protection efforts. The expansion of clean energy is expected to support long-term energy self-reliance and the development of a green economy.
