Kathmandu: Nepal and Norway have signed two new implementation agreements under the Energy for Development Program (2025–2029), marking a new milestone in their long-standing partnership in the energy sector.
The agreements aim to strengthen collaboration in renewable energy, environmental management, and institutional capacity building. The program will facilitate knowledge sharing between Norwegian and Nepali public institutions involved in the development of the energy sector.
Key focus areas include:
- Licensing, Impact Assessment, and Monitoring: Building strong systems for environmental oversight and dam safety.
- Electricity Sector Management: Enhancing energy security, system operations, and regional power trade.
- Climate Change and Biodiversity: Promoting climate adaptation and conservation of Nepal’s natural heritage.
The program is funded by Norad and involves major institutions from both countries, including Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Nepal Electricity Authority, Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, and Electricity Regulatory Commission.
From Norway, key partners include the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), Miljødirektoratet, Statnett, and Norad.
Officials from both sides expressed confidence that the partnership will advance Nepal’s transition toward clean, inclusive, and sustainable growth.
