Kathmandu, October 30. Nepal Electricity Authority has received approval for the renewal of the 283 MW electricity export permit. The Central Electricity Authority, under the Ministry of Power of India, on Wednesday renewed the approval given for the export of 283 MW of electricity generated from eight different hydropower projects in Nepal.
The Authority has approved the sale of domestic and foreign surplus electricity in the day-head and real-time markets of the Indian Power Exchange (IEX) at competitive rates and in the state of Haryana and Bihar as per bilateral mid-term power sales. Electricity is being exported to Bangladesh using India’s transmission infrastructure. The approval for the sale of electricity at competitive rates in the Indian Power Exchange (IEX) market is a renewal of 4 sales. The approval for the sale of electricity generation at 103 megawatts for income was completed on various dates. All exports are prohibited for one year with effect from last Tuesday.
Similarly, under the bilateral agreement, about 180 megawatts of electricity produced from four projects had been sold to the state of Haryana. The permission granted for selling electricity to Haryana is set to expire on Thursday (today). The authority sells electricity to Haryana every year from June to October.
The authority had also requested approval to sell the electricity generated by the projects—previously permitted for sale to Haryana—on the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX). The Central Electricity Authority of India has approved this proposal. Now, starting from Friday, the electricity produced by these four projects can also be continuously sold on the IEX.
During his visit to New Delhi, India, to participate in the eighth assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation; Physical Infrastructure and Transport; and Urban Development, Kul Man Ghising, requested India’s Minister of Power, Manohar Lal Khattar, to simplify the process for approving electricity exports.
He also urged the Indian side to immediately approve the renewal proposals that had been sent, emphasizing that this is currently the best time for electricity generation in Nepal.
