Kathmandu. Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has directed the Nepal Electricity Authority to systematize the digital payment system for electricity bills. He said that in the age of information technology, the situation where citizens have to wait in line for hours to pay bills should be ended.
Minister Shrestha informed that the plan to effectively expand ‘digital payment’ has been approved by the Electricity Authority’s board of directors, and he emphasized its effective implementation down to the grassroots level.
Speaking at a discussion with the head of the Electricity Division Office in Hetauda, he said, “Digital payment needs to be expanded further. This will save citizens’ time, reduce costs, and make it easier for us to manage staff, so digital payment should be taken forward as a campaign.”
He stated that although the graph of digital payment has increased, it is not satisfactory, and citizens still have to stand in line. “When it started, its percentage increased sharply. But last year it did not increase by more than one percent. This is a serious matter,” Minister Shrestha said. “In the age of information technology, if citizens have to come to pay money by standing in line, I see a need to further enhance public awareness from the Authority’s side.”
Stating that controlling electricity leakage and protecting electricity infrastructure is the equal responsibility of all, Minister Shrestha also directed the division chiefs to not only reconstruct poles but also to maintain and patrol them. He also directed the division office chiefs to carry out their responsibilities by making good governance and administrative reform their main mantra in decision-making positions.
