Ilam Floods Force Shutdown of 13 Hydropower Plants

Kathmandu — Due to continuous rainfall, floods have caused 13 hydropower projects in Ilam with a combined capacity of 105.4 megawatts to halt electricity production.

According to the Independent Power Producers Association of Nepal (IPPAN), 13 projects have been affected by the floods and production has been halted. The affected projects include the 4.5 MW Mai Khola Hydropower, 8 MW Mai Khola Cascade, 22 MW Mai Khola, 7 MW Mai Khola Cascade, 7.8 MW Super Mai, 9.6 MW Super Mai A, 3 MW Super Mai A Cascade, 7.6 MW Jogmai Khola, 5.2 MW Jogmai Cascade, 6.2 MW Lower Jogmai, 9.5 MW Maibeni Hydropower, 9.9 MW Upper Mai Khola and 5.1 MW Mai C Cascade.

IPPAN has reported that water has entered the powerhouse, culvert, headworks, transmission lines and powerhouses of these projects. IPPAN has also reported that six projects with a capacity of 93 megawatts under construction have also been affected by the floods.

According to IPPAN, this data is as of 2 p.m. on Sunday.
