Final Steps Underway to Grant Generation License to 90 MW Marsyangdi Project

Upper Marsyangdi 2

Kathmandu: A 90-megawatt semi-reservoir-based hydropower project is set to be constructed on the Marsyangdi River in Gandaki Province.

M.A. Power Private Limited is planning to develop the project on the Marsyangdi River covering areas within Bandipur Rural Municipality and Bhanu Municipality of Tanahun district, Rainas Municipality of Lamjung, and Palungtar Municipality of Gorkha.

The company has submitted an application to the Department of Electricity Development seeking a generation license for the project. The department is in the final stages of issuing the generation permit in the company’s name.

To generate electricity from the project, a 74-meter-long barrage will be constructed to divert the water of the Marsyangdi River at the intake point.

To settle sand carried by the river, a surface-type rectangular settling basin with four chambers, comprising four bays, has been proposed.

An 11.9-kilometer-long headrace tunnel has been proposed along the right bank of the Marsyangdi River. The project will also include a 970-meter-long steel penstock pipe. A surface-level powerhouse has been proposed on the right bank of the river.

Inside the powerhouse, four vertical-axis Francis turbines will be installed, through which electricity will be generated. The generated electricity will be transmitted via an 11.6-kilometer-long 220 kV transmission line and connected to the Nepal Electricity Authority’s Markichowk Substation.

The company has set a target to begin electricity generation from the project by April/May 2029 .
